Both clubs sit at 59–46 in late July. New York is second in the AL East, three games back of the Tampa Bay Rays, and holds the top AL Wild Card spot. Chicago is second in the NL Central and holds the top NL Wild Card spot. Neither is running its division, but both are firmly in October position. The Judge-sized absence
The Yankees are navigating this stretch without Aaron Judge, who has been out since late May with a stress fracture in his right rib and was moved to the 60-day injured list in July, with a return targeted for late in the season. In his place, Ben Rice has carried the offense with a breakout year — team-leading home run and RBI totals and a slugging percentage north of .580. Cody Bellinger, re-signed in the offseason, and Paul Goldschmidt round out the lineup, with David Bednar closing. Aaron Boone remains in his ninth season as manager.
The Cubs at home
Chicago counters with the NL's most exciting young star in Pete Crow-Armstrong (around 23 homers and 26 steals), the veteran presence of Alex Bregman — himself a longtime AL East antagonist now in Cubbie blue — and Shota Imanaga fronting the rotation. Wrigley in a national window, against the Yankees, with both teams chasing a division and holding a Wild Card, is about as good as a regular-season atmosphere gets.
A rare meeting
Yankees–Cubs isn't a standing rivalry — interleague scheduling means the clubs meet only occasionally — which is part of the appeal. Their most famous shared history is the 1932 World Series and the legend of Babe Ruth's "called shot" at Wrigley Field. A midsummer regular-season meeting between two contenders is a very different, but genuinely rare, treat.

With Judge out, Rice has been the Yankees' most productive hitter. In a hitter-friendly Wrigley setting, he's the New York bat most likely to decide the game.

A subplot of its own: a hitter who spent his career tormenting the AL East now doing it from the other league. Bregman knows this opponent as well as anyone in the Chicago dugout.
